Learn how to make spirulina capsules and answer a burning question, “Just how much spirulina should I take in a day?!” Read on to find out!
Superfood from the Sea: Spirulina Benefits
Spirulina is a blue-green algae that naturally grows in pure freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds. It is considered a heavy-weight superfood because it has one of the highest concentration of carotenoids.
That’s not all spirulina is rich in! This superfood also contains a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, selenium, and gamma linoleic acid.
If you’re vegetarian or vegan, good news! Spirulina is a superior protein supplement as it contains 65-75% protein, majority of which is digestible protein.
How Much Spirulina Should I Take Every Day?
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the standard dose of spirulina for adults is four to six 500 milligrams tablets per day. The dosage also varies according to your age and health needs.
Consult a doctor before taking the spirulina capsules, especially if you have any health concerns.
One size ‘0’ gel capsule can hold 500mg of powder, which is perfect when it comes to tightly packing spirulina powder into the size ‘0’ capsules. You can then consume 4-6 tablets every day.
However, the weight depends on the density and fineness of the powder, so the only way to be sure is by weighing the individual material.
Also, you can do this – if your dosage is six 500mg capsules a day, then that will be 3000mg of spirulina to be consumed. Measure the powder using a scale to make sure it amounts to 3000mg then pack it into capsules.
Where to Get Spirulina Powder
I love buying my own organic spirulina powder to make homemade spirulina capsules.
This way, I can control what goes into my spirulina capsules – without the fear of not knowing what’s in conventional spirulina supplement capsules! Many spirulina supplements contain other ingredients you may not want or additives that you can omit if you make your own spirulina capsules.
I also love adding spirulina powder to my smoothies – that dark healthy green color makes you feel like you’re doing some real good to your body from the inside!
Please buy 100% pure good quality spirulina powder. I like USA Certified Organic Spirulina Powder by BNLabs.
How to Make Spirulina Capsules
Making your own spirulina capsules is a way to easily take supplements without having to taste spirulina.
It also makes it quicker and more effective to take your dose of nutrient rich spirulina! Here are steps on how to make spirulina capsules:
- Step 1: Start with clean dry hands (you can also put on gloves). Uncap ‘0’ gelatin/vegetable gelatin capsules.
- Step 2: Dump your spirulina powder in a bowl and place it on the wax paper.
- Step 3: Now get the larger part of the capsule and use it to collect the spirulina powder until full.
- Step 4: Close it up with the smaller part of the capsule. Shake it up and down to settle the powder. Voila! You’ve made our first spirulina capsule!
- Step 5: Sit down and fill up as many number of capsules as you need. You can make capsules for the week/month. Sitting in front of the TV while doing this can make time fly by! Of course, you may want to get a capsule filling micro spoon spatula so you can easily fill the capsules without having to get all handsy.
Note: If you find filling the capsules by hand time consuming and frustrating, you can buy a capsule machine. It also takes time though, and some people find it more effective when they use their hands to fil individual capsules. It’s all your preference, though!
Now if you’d rather make your own capsules, please purchase high quality spirulina capsules!
Here are videos showing the way you can make your own capsules at home, manually and using the Capsule Machine.
Contraindications
- Children and pregnant women should not take spirulina without first consulting a doctor.
- People with phenylketonuria, also called PKU, should not take this spirulina. This is due to the presence of phenylalanine in spirulina.
Avoid spirulina supplements if you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis or lupus. - Avoid taking spirulina in conjunction with immunosuppressant drugs because spirulina boosts immunity which may counteract the effects of these medications.
