Rosemary is a well-known culinary herb but it’s also been used as a hair rinse by women in the Mediterranean region! I will show you how to make rosemary hair rinse for hair growth below.
6 Benefits of Rosemary Hair Rinse for Hair
- Boosts Scalp Circulation: Rosemary contains ursolic acid which helps to increase blood circulation on the scalp. What this means is each and every hair follicle will receive more oxygen and nutrients. This in turn promotes hair growth!
- Darkens Gray Hair: Traditionally, a rosemary hair rinse or tonic has been used to darken gray roots and slow the appearance of gray hairs. This is due to its high concentration of antioxidants. These antioxidants stop oxidation caused by free radicals and hydrogen peroxide, both of which are responsible for premature graying and hair thinning.
- Remove Product Build-Up: Using a rosemary hair rinse helps scrape off product buildup from the scalp and hair strands. This revitalizes your hair, leaving it soft and shiny.
- Anti-Dandruff: Rosemary has antimicrobial properties that fight against the yeast/fungi that causes dandruff. This makes it a useful remedy for dermatitis and dandruff.
- Soothes Inflammation: If your scalp is sensitive and prone to redness, a rosemary hair rinse can help soothe that. It has great anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce scalp inflammatory conditions like scalp dermatitis, pruritis, eczema and psoriasis.
- Strengthens Hair Roots & Strands: One great thing about using a rosemary hair rinse is that it helps strengthen your hair follicles and also the hair strands. Your hair strands won’t break as easily or get damaged if you start using a rosemary hair rinse!
How to Make Rosemary Hair Rinse for Hair Growth
Baking soda and apple cider vinegar are both clarifying and pH-balancing for the scalp and hair. Choose either one or skip it out if you don’t want them because these are optional ingredients.
Peppermint is also optional in this rosemary hair rinse but it doubles the hair growth properties!
If using fresh rosemary, you may need 3-4 sprigs. For fresh mint, you may need about 8-10 leaves.
What you Need
- 1 tbsp organic dried rosemary (where to get it)
- 1 tbsp organic dried mint (where to get it) *optional
- 1-2 cups of filtered water
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (where to get it) or apple cider vinegar (where to get it) *optional
- Ball mason jar (where to get it)
- Saucepan
- Stove
- Tea strainer (where to get it)
Preparation
- In a saucepan, boil 1-2 cups of water. When it starts boiling, add 1 tablespoon each of dried rosemary and dried mint.
- Let the dried herbs simmer in the water for about 15-20 minutes on medium heat or until the solution has fully cooled down.
- Now strain the solution into a ball mason jar.
- Feel free to add more filtered water because some of the water you added will have evaporated.
- Add 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda or apple cider vinegar and mix thoroughly with a glass stirring rod.
- Your rosemary hair rinse is ready!
- Shake before use.
- To use, pour over your hair as your final hair rinse after shampooing and conditioning.
- You may or may not rinse again with plain water, it’s your choice.
- Dry your hair as usual.

Hi, I have sista locs, can e use this rinse as normal?
admin says
Hey Teresa,
You definitely can do it as the last step when you’re washing your locs.
Em says
Step 7 doesn’t make sense. Can you re-state or clarify it for me please.
admin says
Hi Em,
Basically, after shampooing your hair, pour the rosemary hair rinse all over your scalp and hair. Then do not wash it off with water. Simply wring out the excess water then dry and style your hair as usual.
Hope that helps! <3

I made a batch of this and it started to smell horrible after a few days. Like old sushi. Is it supposed to be refrigerated? Aside from that, I can definitely tell that my 46 year old hair is way bouncier and healthier.
admin says
Hey Liz,
Always use this hair rinse immediately you make it so it’s extra effective for your scalp & hair. Your hair will be left smelling exactly like fresh herbs.
If you don’t have the time to use it right away, please store it in the refrigerator, where it can keep for several days.
Hoorah for your bouncier and healthier hair! Take care, beautiful xx

I had blonde hair before going gray. I was wondering what this would do to the color of my hair? I certainly wouldn’t want brown or black hair, but I would like the benefits this rinse offers otherwise. Thank you for your help!

Hi lola, I use this once a week personally. You’ll see results with consistent use within 6-8 weeks. Patience is key 🙂 If your hair easily tangles without conditioner, then please go ahead and use conditioner after this hair rinse, no worries <3
