Diet and Endometriosis – The Connection
What you eat greatly affects your health, including your reproductive health. In fact, research has shown that most women suffering from endometriosis seem to consume fewer vegetables and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids while consuming more red meat, coffee and trans fats (source).
Quite a number of studies show the correlation between diet and endometriosis, as we shall see below:
A wide prospective cohort study carried out in 2018 reported an inverse association between greater fruit intake and risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis. This was true especially for citrus fruits. Women who consumed more than 1 serving of citrus fruit per day had a 22% lower endometriosis risk compared to those consuming less than 1 serving per week (source).
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables including higher levels of pro-vitamin A nutrients such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin is essential for women with endometriosis, as they have been reported to have lower intake of Vitamin A than women without endometriosis (source).
A recent prospective cohort study from 2021, showed that greater dairy consumption, specifically yogurt and ice cream, during adolescence is associated with a lower risk of laparoscopically-confirmed endometriosis (source).
The study goes on to mention that retrograde menstruation is suspected to be a potential causal catalyst for endometriosis, and the high magnesium levels found in dairy products would relax smooth muscle and might reduce retrograde menstruation (source).
