Superfoods are nutrient-dense foods that are rich in antioxidants. Let’s find out my top 10 best superfoods for PCOS in this article – they help manage PCOS symptoms effectively!
10 Best Superfoods for PCOS
1. Kale
Kale is a leafy-green superfood that is a great addition to your PCOS diet. It is rich in nutrients such as calcium which is important for follicle development in the ovaries as well as egg maturation. Kale is also high in iron, which is good for replacing iron lost through heavy or prolonged bleeding affecting some women with PCOS.
Note: It’s important for you to eat only cooked kale as raw kale contains goitrogens that aggravate thyroid issues and affect those with PCOS.
2. Goji Berries
A bright orange-red superfood from the Himalayas, goji berries (buy here) were prized in Chinese medicine for promoting longevity and energy. They contain 18 types of amino acids, 21 trace minerals, iron, B-vitamins, Vitamin E, and a high amount of antioxidants. Those with PCOS should look into eating foods high in antioxidants to help regulate hormones in the body naturally.
Goji berries can be added to chia seed puddings, added to baked goods, used to make goji berry tea or eaten as is.
3. Spirulina
Spirulina (buy here) is a beautiful blue-green form of algae that is found in fresh alkaline waters like ponds and lakes. It is one of the highest food sources of proteins in the world! It is also rich in chlorophyll, beta-carotene, essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and other antioxidants.
It is good for PCOS because of its detoxifying qualities that help remove toxins and heavy metals out of the body. Spirulina also cleanses the blood and promotes anti-aging. If you are trying to conceive with PCOS, spirulina is one of the best superfoods for PCOS fertility because it is a nutritive food that supports a healthy pregnancy.
A standard daily dosage of spirulina is 1-3 grams for an adult. However, spirulina enthusiasts have taken up to 10 grams in a day effectively. You can take spirulina in capsule form, or take a detoxifying drink early morning by mixing 1 teaspoon of spirulina, 1 teaspoon raw honey and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water. Drink up and wait 20 minutes before having breakfast.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
One of the top superfoods for PCOS is apple cider vinegar (buy here). As a PCOS sufferer myself, I make sure to take apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning every single day without fail. Make this by mixing in 1 cup of warm water: 1-2 tsp of raw apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp raw honey and ½ tsp ground cinnamon. I recently started adding 1 tsp aloe vera juice and 1 tsp spirulina/chlorella. Mix well and drink 30 minutes before breakfast.
It is rich in probiotics that help introduce good bacteria in the gut. The good bacteria helps balance the entire ecosystem in the body. For more information, please read my post: Is Apple Cider Vinegar Good for PCOS.
5. Avocado
Are you struggling with PCOS infertility? Avocados should be your number one food! The light bulb shape of an avocado looks like a womb and hear this – it takes exactly nine months for an avocado to grow from a blossom to a ripened fruit!
This creamy superfood is also rich in healthy fats that reduce inflammation. PCOS sufferers need to bring down inflammation in the body to help improve symptoms such as irregular periods, ovulatory infertility and chemical pregnancies.
6. Chia Seeds
It’s time to start sprinkling chia seeds (buy here) everywhere: in oatmeal, smoothies, yogurt and even in your drinks! Chia seeds are packed with omega 3 fatty acids that are a powerful nutrient for managing PCOS. Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body, and help improve free testosterone levels.
If you’re trying to get pregnant, omega 3 fatty acids help improve quality of the eggs produced from the ovaries which increases fertility. Eating chia seeds also improves insulin sensitivity which affects PCOS sufferers.
7. Flaxseeds
Just like chia seeds, flaxseeds (buy here) also contain omega 3 fatty acids which makes them a PCOS superfood. Flaxseeds also contain lignans which mimic estrogen in the body. Eating flaxseeds helps balance out hormones naturally which is helpful for PCOS sufferers as this is a hormonal disorder.
Flaxseeds can be added to smoothies! You can also add it in pancakes and baked goods. You can buy ground flaxseed because the hard hull which is hard to digest is broken down, making it easier to digest.
8. Maca Root Powder
Maca root (buy here) is an ancient Peruvian superfood that was valued as a fertility food. Today, it’s known to be an excellent food for balancing hormones naturally, which helps increase fertility. It helps reduce growth of unwanted hair and regulate menstruation.
I like to add maca root powder in my coffee, milk or hot chocolate. It has a mild nutty taste that is palatable. You can also add it to smoothies and baked goods.
9. Cinnamon
Cinnamon is great for stabilizing blood sugar. Insulin sensitivity is one of the symptoms of PCOS, and PCOS sufferers are at an increased risk of Type II diabetes! Regularly consuming ground cinnamon (buy here) is great for keeping your blood sugar levels in check.
It also helps suppress appetite which helps prevent bingeing and gaining excess weight. Reducing excess weight is one of the main treatment options for PCOS which helps manage symptoms and heal PCOS!
Drink warm water with cinnamon and apple cider vinegar daily on an empty stomach. Recipe here. You can also sprinkle it on oatmeal, smoothies, coffee or hot chocolate.
10. Raw Cacao
Cacao is the unprocessed version of cocoa which is used to make chocolate. Raw cacao powder is a tasty superfood that can be used to make healthy hot chocolate! It is also very nutrient-dense: it contains high amounts of antioxidants, magnesium, iron, manganese, and chromium. Raw cacao is also a natural aphrodisiac which means it’s good for boosting fertility!
Add 1 tsp of raw cacao powder into a mug of warmed almond milk, then add enough natural sweetener like raw honey or organic maple syrup and mix well. Sip up your healthy PCOS-busting treat!
