You should consider making this cleansing and detoxifying spirulina sugar scrub! Our skin needs a detox from the outside once in a while too!
Sugar scrubs are a nice way to deep cleanse your skin.
If you have problematic skin or cellulite, this can be really frustrating because everyone wants smooth and soft skin.
A sugar scrub helps scrounge off all this ick stuck in the pores, which leaves skin feeling fresh and healthy!
When it comes to making a sugar scrub, the ingredients you use should be specifically targeted to your skin type or issue. Ensure to use a wet ingredient that suits your skin. You can choose a non-pore clogging oil such argan oil, hemp seed oil or sunflower oil.
In this recipe, I am using argan oil and sunflower seed oils which are perfectly safe oil to use any skin type. I also use superfood spirulina for its detoxifying and skin boosting properties! Let’s see more benefits:
Benefits of Spirulina for Your Skin
Spirulina is known as the most nutrient dense superfood on the planet. It is rich in nutrients such as Vitamin A, B-vitamins, Vitamin C, iron, copper, omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, magnesium, calcium which are all beneficial for the skin.
Here’s a quick summary of what benefits spirulina has to offer skin:
- Spirulina detoxifies the skin
- Strengthens skin cells
- Improves skin complexion
- Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
- Helps reduce cellulite
- Supports the skin’s natural moisture balance
Other Ingredients Used in this Face Scrub
- Argan Oil – This is the skin care oil I’m currently using on my acne prone skin. It has a comedogenic rating of zero, which means it cannot clog pores. It is also great for moisturizing dry skin.
- Sunflower Seed Oil – This oil is light-weight and has a comedogenic rating of zero as well. It helps lock moisture into your skin cells.
- Peppermint Essential Oil – I love peppermint oil because it’s refreshing and leaves your skin feeling perky. It also helps cleanse your skin from deep within.

- 4 drops peppermint essential oil (buy here)
Directions
- In a large bowl, dump ½ cup fine white sugar. Use only fine sugar because normal sugar has large granules that can create micro cuts on your face.

- Mix the two dry ingredients together.
- Then add 1 tbsp of argan oil and 1 tsp of sunflower seed oil and mix thoroughly with a spoon.
- Transfer to an air-tight container.
- Your detoxifying spirulina face scrub is ready for use!
How to Use this Spirulina Face Scrub
- The first step is to wet your face.
- Now get ½ tsp of this spirulina scrub and GENTLY rub it on wet skin in circular motions for a few seconds. The keyword is gently. All sugar scrubs can be harsh if you scrub them hard on your skin. Scrubbing it rough on your skin can lead to tiny cuts/tears on your skin, make your skin red and create a painful sensation! If using it on your face, make sure to shut your eyes tight because you don’t want the sugar granules entering them!
- Next, wash the scrub off your skin using warm water.
- Then splash cold water on your face to seal the pores.
- Pat your skin dry with a towel and voila! Your face will feel refreshed, cleansed and perky!
- Use this scrub once a week or once a fortnight for sensitive skin.
