The Liver & Detox
When you say liver detox, many people automatically think of an alcohol break. While it is true, you need to steer clear of alcohol for a liver detox to work, there’s a lot more to it.
The liver is at the source of several health issues. Most people have a sluggish liver because the liver can easily become overloaded through stress, too much junk food, heavy medication, trauma, poor air quality, drugs, and excessive smoking/drinking.
Some of the important functions of the liver include:
- Production of bile, which helps transport waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion.
- Production of certain proteins for blood plasma.
- Metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
- Enzyme activation
- Production of cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body.
- Storage of glycogen, vitamins and minerals
- Clearing the blood of drugs and other poisonous substances
- Preventing infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream
- And more!
Being the biggest detoxification organ in the body, the liver can do the detoxing process by itself just fine. But it doesn’t hurt to give your liver the help it needs to lessen its burden.
Try this liver detox smoothie with beets to help nourish and support the liver.
Let’s first explore the ingredients in this liver detox smoothie!
Ingredients in this Liver Detox Smoothie for Beets
We shall be using just 6 easily available fresh produce: beet, apple, banana, spinach, blueberries and mint!
Beet
Beets have traditionally been used to boost liver enzymatic activity and increase bile flow, which helps in the liver’s detox function.
A liver filled with harmful substances such as toxins releases them into the bile. This makes the bile thick and sluggish. This stale bile lingers inside the liver without flowing out faster which increases the risk of over burdening the liver.
Beets assist the liver’s natural detoxification process by pushing the slow moving bile containing toxins away from the liver to elimination sites.
Beets have been shown to contain powerful compounds such as betanin, betalains and betacyanin, among others that reduce inflammation, protect against oxidative stress and reduce the risk of liver damage.
By consuming beets, you help increase oxygen in the body which purifies the blood and facilitates the break down toxic wastes to help them be transported to excretory organs to be removed quickly from the body.
Beets also have a healthy dose of Vitamin C and loads of fiber, both of which are natural cleansers of the digestive system, which is an excretory organ the liver uses to expel its wastes.
Apple
Apples are another liver-support food. The polyphenols found in apples keep lipid and serum levels of the liver under control.
Apples also contain a soluble fiber, pectin as well as a compound, malic acid that helps flush out toxins and carcinogens.
Pectin also helps facilitate elimination of cholesterol molecules from the body through regular bowel movements. This assists the liver’s detoxification process.
Eating apples also helps reduce inflammation in the body, thereby protecting it from fatty liver.
Blueberries
These berries are another superfood for your liver.
Studies show that blueberries help protect the liver from damage and reduce the risk of fibrosis.
They also contain polyphenols that fight and prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The powerful antioxidants in blueberries called anthocynanins that reduce inflammation and protect the liver from oxidative stress.
Spinach
Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain high amounts of nitrate, a compound that can prevent and reverse fatty liver disease.
That’s not all! Spinach is rich in an antioxidant called glutathione that promotes good functioning of the liver and boosts the liver’s overall health.
Banana
The humble banana is a fruit that contains nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, Vitamin C, manganese, copper and fiber.
Though it’s not at the top of the list of foods good for your liver, it is a moderately okay fruit that you can consume in your healthy liver diet.
Bananas help sweeten this liver detox smoothie and make it more delicious while adding more fiber that’s good for the digestive system. One banana is less likely to do any harm but if you have a fatty liver and do not consume bananas, you can leave it out, no worries.
Mint
Mint is a refreshing herb that is great for the liver.
It contains as much as 78% menthol, it’s key active compound that stimulates bile production and encourages the flow of bile into the duodenum.
Menthol also clears sluggishness and awakens digestion, which promotes waste removal from the liver and body in general.
